Music legend and cannabis advocate Willie Nelson has thrown his support behind Democratic Senate candidate Beto O’Rourke and is headlining a rally for the candidate at Auditorium Shores in Austin, Texas on September 29th.
Nelson also invited O’Rourke onstage earlier this year at his annual Fourth of July picnic. They played together on “Will the Circle Be Unbroken” and “I’ll Fly Away.”

Nelson has played for politicians in the past. Most famously he performed for Jimmy Carter on the South Lawn of the White House in 1980. However, it is rare for Nelson to throw his weight and support behind a particular political candidate so openly. This is the first time Nelson has ever played a free, public concert for a politician. The concert will feature guests Joe Ely, Carrie Rodriguez, Tameca Jones, and Nelson’s sons Lukas Nelson and Micah Nelson.

“My wife Annie and I have met and spoken with Beto and we share his concern for the direction things are headed,” Nelson said in a statement. “Beto embodies what is special about Texas, an energy and an integrity that is completely genuine.”
O’Rourke will also speak at the event. Although the concert is open to the public, RSVPing on O’Rourke’s website is required to attend.
