The Independent Vermont senator told Kimmel, “We have more people in jail today than any other country on earth. We have large numbers that have been destroyed because of this war on drugs and because people were caught smoking marijuana and so forth. I think we have got to end the war on drugs. Look at what’s going on in Colorado and elsewhere. But I am not unfavorably disposed to moving toward the legalization of marijuana.”
Sander’s had previously hinted that he would throw his support for marijuana legalization, during the Democratic debate, when he and other candidates were asked for their position on an upcoming measure in Nevada to legalize recreational use. “I suspect I would vote yes,” Sanders said. Hillary Clinton, the front-runner in the Democratic race, was noncommittal on the idea of recreational pot.
During the interview, Kimmel went on to joke, “Maybe we can have postal carriers deliver marijuana to people?” “That will get rid of the federal deficit pretty quickly, won’t it?” Sanders cracked back.
Kimmel’s interview with Bernie Sanders did end on a light note, when asked what he thought about Larry David’s Saturday Night Live impersonation, Sanders said: “Well I thought it was pretty, pretty, pretty good!” all while, mimicking David’s Curb Your Enthusiasm catch phrase.
